9 Reasons to Actively Oppose Standardized State Tests in Schools

  • Standardized tests assume that children come standardized, which they don't. Not only is there a huge developmental span between children in the same grade, but it's normal and healthyfor there to be a span. They aren't factory widgets, folks, they are developing humans.

  • Teachers and administrators hate (if they are honest with themselves) the tests. They know every one of the points in this list. If professional educators don't like the tests, perhaps they aren't the best tools for educators to use.

  • These tests cause a great deal of anxiety in children. It is abusive to force kids to sit for hours filling in the little oval bubbles in high-stakes tests. Often, children are not allowed to go to the bathroom while testing. The atmosphere of the classroom becomes oppressive, which is contrary to best teaching practices.

  • These tests cause anxiety in teachers, party because they know they are judged by their students' scores, and partially because the tests interfere with teaching. This is an important point: State tests take about a week out of the time teachers have to deliver the curriculum. More tests means less learning.

  • Tests are causing teachers to teach superficially. Instead of the critical thinking skills that come from investigating something in depth, children are taught to quickly answer questions phrased in test language.

  • These tests are not good assessments of student learning. They are, by their nature, unauthentic. Take math for example. Do we teach math so that kids will know math, or do we teach math so that kids will have math as a tool to solve problems in life? If the latter is the goal, students should be tested by seeing if they can comparison shop, not if they can compare the angles of geometric shapes.

  • State tests send a bad message to our children. We should be modeling integrity, standing up for our beliefs. Instead, we are presenting children with the following subtext: We don't believe in what we are doing but the people in charge tell us to do it so we will follow along like sheep. (I apologize to any sheep who may be reading this.)

  • The time frame is wack. It takes so long to get the results that these tests can't be used to inform teaching in the moment. They can only be used to help the next crop of kids do better on tests.

  • The tests are at variance with Special Education law (IDEA) by forcing students with disabilities to take the same tests as other students.

    How Voting System Comparison?

In a nutshell, the simple majority rule is a channel by which a selection is decided from alternative choices, where one of the selections gain more than half of the submitted votes. This type of voting system has frequently been upheld as a practice which best supports the minorities within our society but is also criticized by its opponents as a prerequisite to a system of tyranny for the majority. In its simplest form each voter is permitted to vote for only one candidate and at the conclusion of the election the winner is determined by the candidate who has received the most votes.
On the other hand, the "Two Thirds Majority rule" is often used at the various levels of government in an effort to prevent the small majority from overtaking the large minority. We often find two-thirds vote necessary in many of our constitutionally supported elections. A typical example is during federal impeachment proceedings. In the course of President Clinton's impeachment procedures it was a constitutional requirement that a two-thirds majority senate vote be achieved for the removal from office process to take place.
Many uninformed people believe that President Clinton was successfully impeached by the senate and simply refused to leave the office. This is not so, for that February the senate arrived in session with anticipation of the final roll call in the presidential impeachment proceedings. After failing to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority vote, Clinton was permitted to serve out his term of office until January 2001. Granted, he was "impeached" by congress but all that did was forward the case to the Senate for final determination which in this case failed.
Between simple majority rule and the two-thirds rule I feel that the later is a more just method of voting. I support this premise in view of the understanding that it is often a mistaken notion that the winner of a campaign is the individual who has the most votes whether these votes have reached the fifty percent threshold or not. Naturally, this can be conceived as majority rule if only two alternatives are at stake. However, in the event there are additional alternatives in the selection process it is completely feasible that the winner could have far less than fifty percent of the votes. This happens frequently when you have splinter parties which have broken off from the major parties. A typical example was the defeat of Al Gore, Jr. in his 2000 bid for the presidential election. As he accepted his party's nomination in June of 1999, little did he realize that his democratic voters would be split during the upcoming election campaign. On election night the count was simply so close to call in Florida and resulted in several recounts being conducted. The problem would not have been so intense had Ralph Nader not taken appropriately 2,882,955 democratic votes from Al Gore. Unfortunately, with 50,456,002 votes for Bush and 50,999,897 votes for Gore the outcome was simply too close.
Most books on rules of order propose using a single majority rule rather than a two-thirds rule. Each method has its own advantages as well as it disadvantages. When using the single majority rule each voter is treated equal and the voter's identity need not be known.

    Values of Colleges Do Matter

You may want to get into a specific program. You may be looking for a scholarship. However, all of this is very important but so is the value set of the school. What type of core values does it have? Is it able to meet your needs through these values? If you are not sure, take the time to learn a bit more about the school before you decide to enroll.
    Quality Education
One of the key things you should see in the core values of the colleges you are considering is the quality of the education provided. Some schools teach curriculums that are outdated or that fail to meet the demands of the industry in which the student will enter. The fact is, if the quality of education is not there, you cannot succeed in the best possible manner. Find out what the school offers to help you to know they are committed to constantly providing the highest quality of education possible.
    Available Resources
Times are tough for some universities. This is evident in the rising tuition costs and the dwindling number of enrollees. However, as you are considering which school to attend, be sure the one you do select has the resources to meet your needs. This includes the human resources to teach classes at a smaller size. It includes financial resources to ensure that all classrooms are stocked and that all materials you need are onsite. It also includes providing you with buildings, classrooms, and equipment that are well maintained and up-to-date. Does the facility really offer the right resources for your success?
    Preparing You for the World
While your focus may be on obtaining a degree, it is also important to consider whether the college has the tools to help you to enter the world and find a job easily. Does it offer career-planning services? Does the school consistently train and adjust curriculums to meet the needs of the workforce? You want to know that when you leave this school that you will have the tools, knowledge, and skills to get a job in the field.
Colleges are not all the same. As you consider all of the options you have, nothing is more important than having a school that's dedicated to helping you to succeed. This is a growing and changing industry and only the best facilities can prepare you for the work force that lies ahead of you. Look for a school with a set of values that makes it clear to you that the facility is doing all it can to prepare you.

    Why Social Work Continuing Education?

If you just started a job in the field of social work, continuing education might be the furthest consideration from your mind. Perhaps you do not even know why it is necessary for you to take the yearly courses that may be required by your job in order to keep your certification. Many people may not completely understand this field. To some individuals, the people in this field are the bad guys in a manner of speaking. It is true that they often have to carry out difficult tasks that others do not like.

If you are in this field and have not been in it for long, perhaps you are just getting to the point where you see the broad spectrum of knowledge that you are going to need to handle the cases you run into. At a nursing home, there might be questions of power of attorney with children and their parents. At hospitals there may be questions of the mental state of a patient and whether they should go home to their children. At schools, there may be a student who needs emotional counseling. There are so many scenarios that could possibly come up. You will not likely run into all of these unless you travel to various places for your job, but they are all options for areas where you can increase your knowledge for social work continuing education.

As the time draws near for you to look into getting in those required hours of social work continuing education for your job, you will want to consider a few things as you look at various institutions. Time will of course be a factor if you work a full-time job. Learning style is another consideration, and you will also want to consider the course topics available at the various locations.

You may not have time to attend courses at the actual college. It may be out of your comfort zone not to have a teacher right in front of you, but with new technology today it can be almost like they are. You can choose from webinars and online courses that will help you to have more flexibility in your schedule. You may even be able to take reading courses.

Your learning style should also be something that you take into consideration when pursuing social work continuing education. If you are not an auditory learner then you will definitely want to have a course where you can at least see the teacher on your computer as they teach. If you do well with just listening then you might do fine with some type of mp3 course.

Five Tips for Learning How to Study

Learning how to study effectively is always a challenge for students who are often overwhelmed and over-committed to school, work and extra-curricular activities. The following tips are some I learned as I struggled through my undergraduate studies. If I had known these things in high school, I'm sure I would have been a better student. By the time I reached graduate school, I was an expert. Follow these suggestions and take the fast track to success!

    1.   Avoid being overwhelmed the last weeks of class by preparing all semester. Of course, the best practice is to stay current with your reading and assignments as they are given. Realistically, staying current doesn't always happen, especially if you have other more demanding classes that require your attention just to stay afloat. If this is the case, you will want to focus on Tip 2 more than ever.

    2.  Spend quality time with your reading assignments. I used to tell my Introductory Psychology classes not to read a chapter word for word. The truth is, especially in Intro courses, the textbook chapters are long and arduous. Unless you're super-human, your reading attention span won't last past the first few pages. Your mind will start to wonder, and the time you spend will be non-productive. Instead, spend quality time with the chapters. Start by flipping through the pages. Look at the section titles to get a general understanding of the chapter content. Go to the end of the chapter and read the Summary or Review sections. You'll be amazed at how much you can get out of a chapter by following the steps described above. Once you have a pretty good idea of the chapter content, go back and take a more careful look. Go through the chapter section by section. Focus your reading around the words in bold print. These point to the key ideas in the chapter. Jot down some notes to help you remember these particular concepts. Be sure to include in your notes the page number on which the topic can be found for future reference. This is especially helpful if you're allowed to use your book or notes for the exam. If you spend 20-30 minutes of quality time with your reading, I guarantee you'll get more out of it than trying to read the entire chapter cover to cover.

    3.   Don't cheat sleep. This tip is critical to good performance. Yes, we can push ourselves a little by staying up later than usual or getting up a little earlier, but the better you do at maintaining your regular sleep schedule, the happier and less stressed you'll be. Disrupting sleep patterns has serious consequences including insomnia. Once you've messed with your circadian rhythm, it's hard to get back to a normal sleep routine because your brain doesn't know when it's time to start shutting down. A common complaint from college students is that their brains won't shut off so they can go to sleep. Lack of sleep also triggers our stress response system, which means your body is being flooded with cortisol. Increased cortisol levels can cause insomnia so you can see it's a viscous cycle. The truth is, you can perform better when rested; therefore, you can complete the work in about half the time. If you study when you're rested, you'll not only be able to retain more information, you'll be a happier person to be around.

    4.  Avoid cramming. Cramming for a test rarely produces a positive outcome. Here's the problem. Our brains can hold only a certain amount of information in short-term memory. When you cram for a test, you are literally trying to cram information into short-term memory, but your brain will only retain a limited amount of what you cram into it. I used to give this example to my students. Hold your hands together to form a cup shape. Now imagine you're putting information into this rather small container. Eventually, the container will get full. If you keep trying to put information in the container, some of the information you already put in will be forced to spill out. It works kind of like pouring too much tea into a teacup. How do you solve this problem? If you follow Tip 2 above, you will effectively transfer some of the information to long-term memory, which has a much larger capacity for retaining information. You can create large networks of information by tying the new information to something you already know. Figure out how to make it make sense and you won't forget it. Guaranteed!

    5.   Factor down time into your schedule. Believe it or not, this act will help you be a better student. The truth is that our brains and bodies need down time to recover and rejuvenate. A rejuvenated brain will perform better than a brain that is drained and exhausted. The thought of down time might seem unrealistic when you're experiencing end-of-the-semester crunch time. Assignments, papers, and projects are due, and you have to get ready for the final exam. Down time doesn't have to be a long time. It just has to be time that you don't read, use the computer, or think about all the work you have ahead. Down time has to be quality time. It might include a walk around the block, 30 minutes of television, dinner with a friend, or relaxing meditation.

    How Alternative Educational Methods?

21st century, latest technological gadgets and modern outlook - we seem to have everything. There's still something which we crave for when it comes to education for our little ones and that is different teaching methods. Why is it that, we, as parents are not satisfied with the teaching methods adopted by schools and colleges? Is it because children are pressurized too much into studying or is it that education in school is only limited to academics?
Whatever be the reason, parents are trying to look for alternative educational methods, wherein their children can not only learn better, but also in an easy way, without stressing them. So, what are the other methods available for parents to explore? As of now, we can find that there are 3 alternative educational methods available for parents and children. They are:
    1. Montessori schools
    2. Waldorf/ Steiner schools
    3. Friends schools
    4. Homeschooling

While the Montessori schools and Waldorf schools are gaining popularity among many, friends school and homeschooling are not much known in India. One can find that the Montessori Method of learning is fast catching up in our country as an alternate educational method. Initially, one may notice that the child is not taught on par with the subjects and topics in regular schools, but as they get used to the schedule and pattern of learning, they are exposed to more topics and subjects. With hands on experience given importance to understand the various concepts, children find that they love the very thought of going to school and learning.
Montessori methods not only emphasize on the importance of the child to understand the concepts, but also help them in their overall development. A 7/8yr old child being able to give a speech on a greener planet and global warming with data is something which can mesmerize anyone of us. Yes, this is possible through the Montessori Method, wherein children learn to deliver speeches and take part in debates as early as 8/9years.
The Waldorf method is also on the similar lines, wherein a child's creativity is put to task to imagine and understand everything and also use analytics to analyze the same. One can also find that in this method of teaching/learning, a teacher is given the freedom to choose the syllabus and curriculum that they term fit for the students of their class. This helps the teacher decide on how much to cover in a topic and also how much can the students understand and learn.

What Benefits of an Early Education?

Some of the benefits of teaching a young child might not be seen immediately. Parents invest large amounts of time to make sure that their child receives all of the formal education that they are entitled to by Law and likewise, they might additionally seek out academic advantages from other sources that can prove useful to the youngster further down the road in life. The advantages might be seen in larger pay rates or from a medical marvel that the scholar achieved.

The general schooling programs ensure that young students graduate with a certain level of understanding about the basic principles related to reading, writing and performing mathematical computations. These are tools that will be extremely useful in the business world however many parents believe that these foundations can be improved on. With each year that goes by, a child should learn more as a result of the business world becoming ultra competitive.

Some schools have started teaching students earlier in life. This extra training time may facilitate the child's development of a firmer understanding of the basic skills that will ultimately lead to a successful life. Other targeted topics of study are added to the curriculum that may cause the student to find out the way to research subjects and summarize the findings of the studies that they have completed.

Many programs will require that students think on their feet and perform tasks that used to be reserved for university students years before them actually being in college. The fast paced environment of the corporate sector demands a high level of performance that has got to be delivered effectively on a day to day basis. The slackers aren't the ones that get chosen for jobs that carry greater responsibilities and pay high salaries. These jobs are usually reserved for those who have completed college.

Foreign languages are currently center stage in several school curriculums because the business industry has expanded to such a degree that it's reached a worldwide scale of monumental proportion. Learning institutions are beginning to acknowledge the importance of educating students to be ready to conduct business in several foreign countries and to accomplish that effectively, the schools understand that the student will have to know the language in these countries and have the ability to talk in that language fluently.

Is Your Special Education Child Actually Being Served?

First of all, I would like to let you know that there are many special education teachers who, day in and day out advocate for special education children, and teach your child to the best of their abilities. The fact is that these teachers are not being supported, and are being made to put their license on the line, and first and foremost serve the local high-profile students first. What do I mean by high-profile students? I mean students whose parents are school administrators, lawyers, local politicians, or work for some other local high-profile organization. That's right, if you are not one of these parents, then you need to investigate whether or not your child is being served properly, according to his IEP. The excuse that the administration give the teachers for this behavior, is that they do not have enough money to hire enough special education teachers.

Let me take a moment here and educate you as to what that statement actually means. Not having enough money does not mean that the state or the city does not have enough money to hire teachers. What it means is that they did not budget enough money to hire the teachers necessary to accomplish the balanced service of special education students. They have budgeted many thousands of dollars in states such as South Carolina, for roads, highways, and research to stop flooding on city streets, and at the same time laid off teachers. Oh, of course they don't call it a layoff, they cover that by calling teachers positions slots, and just tell you the parents that there are no slots left. The parents tend to buy into what the school system says, because the school system is very good at covering their tracks.

At this point you may be asking how I know these things, and where I was able to acquire my information. I have been a special education teacher in two states and in at least three major counties. I have relatives who are teachers in other states, so my information is about as inside as it gets. In fact you can hang your hat on it. As I am writing this I am in contact with state officials and am trying to create a task force for this very purpose. I don't know if I will be able to pull this off without the backing of many parents with children having special needs, and attending public schools. Now that you understand that I am in contact with many special education teachers, I want you to know the unbelievable truth, and that is that when these teachers complain that they are serving high-profile cases, and they are not able to find the time to serve others, that do not have parents in high places, they are threatened, they are told that they will lose their jobs if they say the wrong thing, they are given extra work to do, sometimes in an attempt to have teachers quit if they rock the boat.

5 Educational Advocacy Tips for Parents

Most parents who have a child with special needs want to home school their child. They choose to do so in order to keep their child safe from peer pressure and close to themselves, for their child's safety. This can be a daunting process, if you choose to educate your child yourself. However, it is not insurmountable. Check out the following steps that can make the process easier:

    1. Know what suits your child best
You as a parent know the best for your child. If you feel that your child has a certain disability, you can help them cope with it. You understand your child best so you decide better what can help them learn. You can use different visuals, cues and other fun learning ways to educate your child.

    2. Use letters to communicate important matters
Communication through email or telephone doesn't work really well. Letters help you keep track of the entire history of communication. You may need to look back at your child's documents later in case you fall into a disagreement with the educational advocate. You may create "minutes of the meeting" and send a copy to the personnel later, in case you have a face-to-face conversation.

    3. Ask the educational advocate if you feel something is wrong
Your child's advocate may suggest something that you may disagree with. You have all the right to ask for the details about the policy regarding that matter. It is important that all parents know about the policies for children with special needs. If need be, you can also ask for proof of the policy that your child's advocate may suggest, for the benefit of your child.

    4. Know the special education and disability laws in your state
It is important that you know all the laws related to special education and disabilities. This is important for your child's education and future. You can avoid going misinformed by the special education personnel. The personnel may not communicate important matters that can affect your child's education process.

    5. Know the rights that your child has under special educational services
It is essential to know what sort of special care and service your child is entitled to. You can talk to your child's advocate; do some self-research too, in order to provide the best education for your child. Educational advocacy services are of great help, as they make sure your child's needs are fulfilled and your child receives proper education.

Tips For Parents of Specials Needs Children

ou can get a very good, quality education for your special needs child within the school system. You do need to take heed of some important aspects when dealing with disabilities and the school district.

Educate yourself before you go into a meeting with the professionals in the school district:

    * Learn all you can about your child's specific disability (classification)
    * Learn your rights & responsibilities (for you & your child)
    * Learn the rights & responsibilities of the school district
    * Find an advocate through the state dept. of education
    * Find a support group or start one of your own
    * Find online support groups- they have a wealth of information that you may need.

You will never learn all the laws of special education as there are several notebooks (about 4 inches thick) filled with these laws. You can, however, learn the laws that pertain to your child and their specific needs.

Your child is entitled to a FREE & Appropriate Public Education!!!

Always keep a record of any and all meetings (IEP or private) dealing with your child. Document every call you have with the school, teacher or district official, with the date, time, name(s) of those involved & the specifics of the conversation. Do this with all meetings as well (general or IEP specific). Any notes sent home should also be kept in this file for reference at a later date, if necessary.

The school &/or district does not usually freely offer the information to all that you feel your child needs. Before attending any meetings with the school personnel, write a list of questions to ask about the things you feel your child needs to achieve his/her maximum potential in his/her school career.

When attending an IEP meeting, make sure the goals & objectives to reach those goals, are realistic & achievable within the year they will be worked on & monitored. If you feel there are other needs your child has, bring them up at this meeting so they may be added to the IEP & another meeting won't have to be convened to change the IEP. If it's not on the IEP, chances are, it won't be worked on in the classroom. Be sure you stay on top of what your child & their teacher are doing at least weekly. If you wait until marking periods end, you've lost valuable time that could have been spent working on viable goals for your child's success. Become involved in your child's education by volunteering in the classroom.

Some Tips That Will Help You Save For College

As tuition payments rise seemingly every single year, many students are finding it harder and harder to figure out how they are going to pay for college. If you are about to embark on furthering your education and you are worried about the huge expense that comes with getting a degree, here are some tips to help you save.

    1.   Budget - if you've heard of the "Ramen Noodle" diet, it's for a good reason. Most college students are on extremely tight budgets as most of their funds get spent on tuition, books, and other education necessities. Budgeting is going to be a huge part of learning how to manage your money properly so you can spend your money in the right places. You may need to find other options to expensive salon haircuts, buying the top designer clothing, and other things that will no longer take priority during your college stay.

    2.   Dorm vs. Apartment - you might be surprised to know that renting an apartment may be far cheaper than signing up for a dorm. This will all depend on the area you go to college, and if you can find a roommate to split the expenses of an apartment.

     3.  FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is what you will need to fill out in order to apply for financial aid. Depending on your particular circumstances, you may be given grants or loans that will help you pay your tuition.

     4. Scholarships - scholarships are not just for athletes. You can receive scholarships based on your academic achievements, financial needs, volunteering time, or even based on your race or gender. There are thousands and thousands of scholarships available, some even through your own high school and university. A quick search online will bring up a plethora of websites where you can apply for specific scholarships to help you cover your costs.

     5.  Extra Credits - the best way to cut your tuition bill is to graduate early. If you take a few extra classes each semester you will be able to accumulate enough credits to graduate a semester or even a year early. This will be made even easier if you take a few AP courses in high school which will also add credits to your total accumulations.

    How Making Friends at University?

University is a fantastic place to meet new friends. Freshers' Week is one of the greatest times to simply go up to people and say 'Hey!' The first people you will encounter will most likely be your housemates (unless you don't live on campus), but you will also get the opportunity to make friends on your course, in a society that you join, or in part time employment. Don't think that you have to make all of your friends in the first week that you arrive, or even in your first year. Some of the greatest friends you will make, might not be the first people that you meet!

Being with a new group of people can be really exciting; you will do a lot of talking in your first day as you chat to the new people around you! The best way to make friends in Freshers week is to just be yourself; be friendly, open minded and enjoy what other people are talking about. Ask lots of questions too!

What if I commute or live off campus?

If this is you, you can still make some fantastic friends even if you live with your folks. Join some societies and meet people here, and stick around after your lectures or seminars to have a drink with your fellow students. A lot of people make great friendships through their classes and societies and this is ideal for home students. If your friends go on a night out and you want to get involved, ask if it would be alright if you kip one someones floor or sofa.

    Good conversation topics

    - Wear something random if you dare, like a really bright hat. People will admire you for it, and it will prove a great conversation starter!

    - Hobbies. Everyone has them! Ask what people do for fun, and whether they will be joining any societies. You might find that you have something in common with one of your new friends.

    - Has anyone been on a gap year? Almost always someone in your group will have done. Get them to showcase their photos and tell their stories.

    - Where you come from, what you studied, what you are studying at Uni. You might find that someone from your flat is on the same course as you, or that they live near to you back home.

    - Put on some low music as you unpack your stuff on the first day; someone is bound to pop their hand in who loves the same song!

    What if I am shy?

If you are worrying about University because you are shy and quite quiet, don't worry. A lot of people are shy, and a lot will feel exactly the same, and it is completely normal. When it comes to meeting people in the first few days, no one will know anybody else, so you wont be the only new kid on the block.

Most people will leave their bedroom doors open when it's the first day of Freshers; do the same, even if your bedroom is covered in bags of clothes and stuff your Mum packed you. People will be walking down the corridors heading to their new room, so holler out a hello! They will be pleased you made the effort. Introduce yourself with your name; you don't have to waffle out everything about yourself straight away as if you're on Family Fortunes - "Hello my name is Chris, I'm 18 from Manchester!". Start with your name and work it from there. Just try and relax. The person you are saying hello to might come across as confident, but they might be feeling exactly the same inside!

Preparing Your High School Grad For The College Experience

Let's admit it, while we as parents may be looking forward to getting those pesky teenagers out of our hair and gone to school in the fall, we will also have to face the fact that this is a stepping stone to their adult life and once they are properly enrolled at the college of their choice things will never again be the same. Of course, this is a change that cannot be avoided and as a parent is an occasion that is marked by both pride and anguish.

Giving up your child at this time doesn't mean that you need to drop them off at the college campus in August and then forget they ever were around for the next few months. To the contrary, your goal and role will be to guide them through this transition. To give them with the support they need to be successful and the shoulder to cry on for every bump in the road.

Before you begin packing the suitcases and boxes and choosing the dormitory supplies you will need to prepare your child mentally for the road ahead. There are many challenges to this new beginning and there will be some hiccups as they go along. They will face financial challenges along with emotional ones. Many will be alone without familiar supports for perhaps the very first time in their lives, and this means that they may wind up calling Mom or Dad to help guide them through a problem or crisis.

It is at this point that parents must proceed with caution and not put out the welcome flag and invite their student to come running home. Within a few days most issues, even the really serious ones, begin resolving themselves so it is best to listen actively to your student and encourage them to figure out their own plan of action without attempting to rescue them. A large part of becoming an adult is to learn to take care of your own issues.

Which Nursing School Is Best for You?

Nursing programs are getting more and more popular these days, and for good reason. With jobs in other sectors being eliminated or sent offshore, the health care field stands out as an area that is actually growing, and will be for many years to come. So if you want to become a nurse, the next step is choosing the right Allied Nursing School to fit your needs.

Generally, there are three ways you can approach getting into the nursing field. Here is a summary of each.

    CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant)

A CNA is not an actual nurse, but rather a nurse's assistant. For those interested in becoming a full-fledged nurse, the CNA program is only a stepping stone. However, it does have its benefits. The biggest one being it only takes literally a few weeks to get through the training. Then, all you need to do is pass your certifications and you're ready to get started working. For those who need immediate income of just want to get their feet wet in the medical field to see if this is for them, becoming a CNA may be a great first step. The pay is decent-around $15 an hour, and the experience is very relevant to what you'd be doing if you go on to become a nurse.

    LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse)

The bulk of people that pursue a nursing career end up in an LPN program. The reason is that LPN training can be completed in only a year or two, and graduates can work as an actual nurse. When you examine the benefits of LPN school verses a conventional four year college, it's easy to see why more people are choosing this option. Consider that with just a couple years of training, you can come out and enter a career with an abundance of jobs paying somewhere in the mid five figures, while your peers come out of a four year college and are lucky to get any kind of job at all. And if you become an LPN, there's nothing stopping you from continuing your education and going all the way to RN.

    RN (Registered Nurse)

The highest position in the nursing field is an RN. They are the supervisors and the ones with the most responsibility and highest pay. It does take longer to complete the training (usually about two years longer than an LPN program), but the reward is being able to command a higher salary and earning greater qualifications. Students who are willing to put in the extra schooling will find RN to be a good choice, but if you'd rather be working sooner, then LPN training may be best for you. And as previously stated, LPNs often make the leap to RN by going to school part-time while working as a nurse.

Which Nursing Program Is My Best Choice?

In case you haven't heard, nursing is a great field to get into these days. Well actually, it's pretty much always been a good career to be in, but even more so today. The reason is that western populations have a greater number of elderly people than ever before. And the ever aging population will require more health care workers. So if you want to become a nurse, the next step is finding a nursing school that's right for you.

When it comes to choosing a nursing program, there are several options out there. You have traditional and community colleges, online schools, and specialized nursing schools. Depending on which type of school you choose, there are various programs they offer. Some offer CNA (certified nursing assistant) programs, others offer LPN (licensed practical nursing) programs, and still others offer RN (registered nursing) programs. The one you choose to enter will depend on your individual situation and your goals for the future.

The CNA program is the quickest way to get into the medical field. Schooling only takes a few weeks, then it's just a matter of getting certified and going to work. Once on the job, the pay is around $15 an hour, and you'll be working with and assisting nurses with their various duties. It's really a good way to get some experience working in a medical environment. And if you decide that you like this kind of work, then you can enroll in an LPN program and move toward becoming a licensed practical nurse.

LPN training isn't quite as easy and quick as becoming a CNA. To become an LPN, you need to go to school for about 1-2 years. Still, this is a much shorter time in school then if you go for a four year liberal arts degree. And after you come out of school and pass your board exam, you enter a lucrative job with stability and great benefits. Not only that, LPNs are in demand pretty much everywhere, so whatever area of the country or world you want to live, chances are you can get an LPN job there.

If you do complete an LPN program and go to work, you may decide that you want to aim even higher. Becoming an RN would be your next step, and would require a one to two more years of school. This schooling can be done part time while working as an LPN, or if you prefer, you can always go straight into an RN program if you can afford to wait a little longer to go to work.

Five Ways a Science Tutor Can Help Your Child

Many parents mistakenly think that a science tutor is synonymous with someone their child's age or a year or two older who happens to study a bit more. While there are probably high school kids out there who call themselves tutors and do little more than help their charges read their books, this has nothing to do with professional tutoring. If you're going to pay to get your child extra attention and education, you should make sure you're getting what you're paying for. A child in school today can't afford to fall behind, especially in one of the most important subjects. Here are some ways a good after-hours educator will help your child.

    Teaching by Example

It is a science tutor's responsibility to not simply teach to a test, but to spark an excitement about the subject in their students. The subject, at its root, is all about exploration and curiosity about the world. This can get lost in a book filled with facts and tired experiments, but a good teacher will make sure that spark stays alive.

    Go Beyond the Book

A good science tutor will be able to go beyond whatever book the child is learning with in school. There is potential for learning in every room, in every house, in every yard, and in every neighborhood. Once a child sees that the subject of observation and questioning isn't limited to what's in the book, they may find it much easier to relate.

    Look Around

A small child won't need to be told to look around and be curious about their surroundings. Once a child reaches his or her teen years, it may be difficult to interest them in anything but video games, music, and TV. A good science tutor will work to open their eyes back up, hopefully inspiring them to reclaim some of that childhood observation.

    Questions, Questions, Questions

People learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions about the subject at hand. A student may be nervous about speaking up in class, especially if they have a teacher who will shame them if the question is deemed "bad". This is a particular danger if your child has a tendency to disrupt with nonsense. A good science tutor will encourage them to lay their fears aside and ask questions whenever necessary.

    Encouragement

A student between the ages of 13 and 18 will not be used to being taken seriously by an educator. Teachers in today's schools (and perhaps it has always been this way to some degree) act as much as disciplinarians and babysitters as they do educators. If a science tutor can instill confidence in a student by taking him seriously, much of the battle will have been won.

How Choosing the Right Portable Buildings for Your School?

With growing class numbers, age group segregation and an increasing number of school subjects on the curriculum, many schools have started to consider portable buildings as a way of creating more space and improving resources. Portable classrooms have been used for many years by schools up and down the country and they have proven very popular with pupils who enjoy the adventure of leaving the main school building to take their lessons!

There are many portable buildings on the market today and the beauty of these structures is that they don't require planning permission and can be erected in a matter of hours. You can choose the size and configuration of your buildings and also add bespoke features such as lighting, heating and even a mains water supply.

Whether you need new portable buildings for a new lesson or you simply have a bigger intake of pupils this year, you can arrange for a number of buildings to be installed on site. When choosing your portable classrooms you will find advice readily available, and you can choose the right size and most suitable features you need to meet your needs and the space you have available.

Many portable buildings in schools are erected on the outskirts of the playground or on a playing field. These are often the only areas that schools have free to have these buildings erected, but the good news is that these buildings can be erected on any solid surface giving you the freedom to plan your classes and place your classrooms where you need them.

Whilst portable buildings are designed as a temporary structure by their nature and their style of construction, they do actually last for many years. Your new classrooms will be built with care by fitters with years of experience in erecting and configuring portable buildings. These buildings offer a great deal of versatility and are also perfect if you are having major building works carried out on other areas of your school, allowing you to continue normal lessons without disruption. They are also perfect as office buildings and come in a wide range of floor plans.

    Preparation For Medical Entrance Examination

Medical entrance exams are like a hard nut to crack which occur annually. More than four lakh students appear for these tests with dreams of becoming successful doctors in future. Not all are lucky enough to make it to the best institutes while other institutions which provide MBBS degrees may or may not be reputed. AFMC (Armed Forces Medical College), AIIMS (ALL India Institute of Medical Sciences), AIMS (Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences) and Bhartia Vidyapeeth are some institutions who conduct these examinations. There are thousands of medical colleges like them who conduct examinations all over India.

The rules for most of the institutions are the same except for a few private institutions. The questions are always from the syllabus of 11th and 12th standard. Physics, chemistry and biology are three subjects which are always asked in the exams. In some cases there is negative marking for every wrong answer with a few exceptions. The course content is quite vast and ample amount of time is required to gain mastery over these subjects. This cannot be done in a fortnight or a month. Rigorous practice and understanding of all concepts needs to be done to get successful in the exams.

Candidates should practice and solve problems everyday to keep themselves on their toes at all times. It has been observed that students first finish the easy parts of a subject while the major portions are left out. In fact it should be the opposite in order to ensure a good score. Sample papers and preceding years' test papers should be practiced regularly in order to where a student stands in exams in reality. Mock tests are the best way to ensure that concepts are clear and completely understood. One of the most important factors to get success is to work according to a study plan. Equal time and devotion to all the subjects must be given in order to know all the subjects completely. 'Motivation' is an important factor which makes it easier for every candidate to prepare for medical entrance exams. Students need to know what motivates them to study, rather what makes them think more about it than any other chore.

The books and reference material and other guide books need to be seen in order to know which ones can benefit them in a better way. Moreover not more than two reference books should be consulted for such exams. Too many of them can create problems for a student and can become a hindrance in learning. Coaching for such exams varies from student to student. Many times there are cases where they do not need coaching at all while in most cases coaching is taken up to clear all problems which they face. Regular study of 8-10 hours a day will be ideal top prepare for such an extensive and intense test.

These considerations are important in helping you determine the effectiveness of the institution that you wish to join. Here are some of the factors that you need to consider about the school you intend to join.

Factors to Consider When Searching for Surgical Tech Schools

    • Quality of training: The worst thing that you can ever do is to select an institution that does not have the capacity to give you enough training. That would not only be a waste of time and money, but also a career suicide. Should I Continue My Education After College?

You finished one milestone - an undergraduate degree, so what's next?

You may be questioning yourself: Should I continue my education after college? Will the benefits outweigh the costs? And so forth.

These questions riddling your mind, can be answered through other queries:

Does your career demand a higher education?

An advanced education will likely boost the career you are working in. If you work in law or medicine, just as an example, the higher skill sets you earn through education, the more qualified you'll become to perform your duties, which leads to better job security - discussed below.

Do you want better job security?

A competitive workforce means only the cream of the crop will thrive. According to the Census Bureau, those with a master's degree earn roughly 15% more than their bachelor holding counterparts. Also, the statistics provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, titled "Education Pays", showed that those holding a higher education fell into lower unemployment categories, along with more median weekly salaries.

Do you want to advance your knowledge and skills?

One of things that will give you an improved advantage in life is knowledge. You've heard this time and again - that books open windows to the world, and an education, better education - is a ticket to your dreams.

Are you passionate about your field of study?

This is the main question you should ask yourself when deciding to pursue a graduate degree. This is because advanced degrees tend to focus on one specific subject area. If you plan to make a lifelong career out of nursing for instance, then taking master's courses in this area is one way of promoting yourself into management roles. The same is true for other careers like teaching, medicine, physiology, psychology and much more.

If you've answered yes to most of these questions, it's perhaps in your best interest to pursue a graduate, or even a post graduate degree.

How Balancing Work and Nursing School?

Balancing nursing school and work can be a big challenge but it is not insurmountable. There are many things that you could do with creative scheduling, finding a program that works for you, and enlisting your support network.

Degree programs for nursing currently abound. Choose a school that is accredited and will allow you to get a job upon graduation. Before you apply or pay any money to a program, do your research and know what you are getting. Once you have a list of reputable and accredited schools that have a good track record of graduate placement upon graduation, it is worthwhile to determine which program is the best fit for you. Some questions to ask of the nursing school you are considering include:

    1. What is the travel time involved

    2. Will I be able to keep my current job and attend this school

    3. How can I afford this degree

    4. Do I need to stay with my cohort or can I be flexible when taking classes and do things on my own timeline?

Keep in mind that there are weekend and night programs that exist and allow professionals to continue working in their current field while attending nursing school.

Consider what your priorities are above all else. Is your current job and income the most important to you? Do you have family members or dependents that are extremely important considerations? What are the needs of your significant other? At the end of nursing school, you will want to know that you succeeded with the backing of all of those people who mean the most to you. It can be an empty feeling to sacrifice everything for a dream, especially when there are online programs, weekend and night programs, and other options to help you achieve your dreams without shirking responsibilities to those who you love. There will be sacrifices of time in any program, but knowing what your priorities are can help you to study more efficiently in order to meet all of your obligations.

Finally, engage a support network. If yours is a little weak at the moment, consider who you would like to be in that close group of friends and family to help you through this big transition. We all need help sometimes. Nursing school is demanding and rigorous and there will be times it is a real challenge to get everything done in a day.
